Well, here’s a holiday Eartha seems to have missed—Drop Everything And Read Day! Despite being a bookworm, I’ve never heard of this particular holiday, but am eager to join in and happy as can be to promote it. Occurring on April 12 each year, D.E.A.R. Day coincides with the birthday of children’s author Beverly Cleary (I read so many of her books when I was a kid…!), and is meant to encourage families to make reading together a part of regular family activities. As they say, the family that reads together…!
So make time today and every day—I have to confess, I think technology has made it easier, since every smartphone can hold quite a few tomes—to escape with a book. I’m reading Ron Chernow’s biography of Washington, among other books (I usually have three or four books going at a time for some reason)—what are you going to drop everything to enjoy?
Only a small portion of my enormous personal library. When we moved, I packed all the books up into wine boxes and set the boxes o’ books up as a twin bed in the guestroom to stage it properly, covering it with a vintage chenille bedspread and a pillow. No one was the wiser!
There’s a Facebook page for Drop Everything And Read day, too, in case you’d like to check-in.
Wink and a smile to the Half Price Books blog for the heads-up!
